The Midnight Hotel

MIDNIGHT HOTEL
STAFF

ANTON SHUDDER
The Hotel proprietor. Anton is over 500 years old, born circa mid-1400s in Ireland. His magic takes the form of a demonic manifestation of his own rage, making him a literal walking weapon. Anton built the Hotel to use that magic to protect others rather than kill them.

More information about Anton can be found in his Tushan application.

ERSKINE RAVEL
Hotel cleaning faerie. Erskine is about 400 years old and an old friend of Anton's, a member of the same Irish black-ops unit. As an Elemental he makes a really good janitor. Theoretically.

More information about Erskine can be found in his HIGHLY SPOILERIFIC Tushan application.

CASEY RAMONE
Live-in medic. On their world Casey was in the process of obtaining a pharmacological degree, but these days handles the Hotel's first-aid supplies and any minor injuries that might occur among the Hotel's frequent gang patrons (outside the Hotel, of course).

More information about Casey can be found in their Tushan application.

YURI LOWELL
Breakfast staff. Yuri is a young man from a world sparsely inhabited by people and densely inhabited by monsters. Though a swordsman, he's also a great cook and is quite willing to take requests for breakfasts. He lives in Sky Sector.

More information about Yuri can be found in his Tushan application.

HERRA
Security. Herra is a kedanese gang-member from Fire Sector (which might be obvious, given her taste for baubles). She's a fine hit with a gun or a crossbow, but prefers the second for non-lethal reasons. She's brash and unafraid of getting in peoples' faces, but uses that to bluff past confrontation rather than get violent. It works pretty well.

Herra is an NPC. Please feel free to NPC her for Hotel services.

LANG-HIN
Desk-greeter. Lang-hin is originally from Water Sector, but lost her house some time ago and since then has been drifting. While friendly enough, she tends not to prompt interactions herself. On the other hand, she's impossible to ruffle and keeps good records of incoming patrons.

Lang-hin is an NPC. Please feel free to NPC her for Hotel services.

MUF
Security. Muf hailed from Earth Sector. Also a gang-member, he's got an uncanny knack for discovery; he's a peddler of black-market goods, and doesn't even hide it. As long as he's in the Hotel, the Snakes can't touch him (and when he's out of the Hotel, he's one hell of a rules lawyer). He's partial to straight-up martial arts in his defence and can be found for sparring.

Muf is an NPC. Please feel free to NPC him for Hotel services.

AN OVERVIEW

The Midnight Hotel is a magical structure built by hand by Anton Shudder roughly a century ago. Ordinarily it moves location every twelve hours, either manually or automatically depending on its programming at any given time. It's highly warded against sieges, particular types of beings (including zombies), and physical and magical internal damage. It also has several internal wards including ones which disrupt firearms and phone-communications.

The Hotel's workings are primarily magical, but present as modern to anyone using its utilities. (Less so to anyone tinkering.) It has a magically-sustained climate, full plumbing and hot water, and all vital amenities.

When the Hotel arrived in Keeliai it did so as a kind of echo; the massive magical presence it had accrued over a century left it with a solid presence outside of time in the same way as a person's soul. The Hotel was stuck in a single physical location, but due to the combination of Keeliai's place outside time and space, and the Hotel's magic as a location-shifter, the Hotel is now capable of accessing all sectors at once. As a result of this shift some of the Hotel's wards and spellwork have changed, but its purpose, rules and general presentation remain the same.

The Hotel essentially takes up unused space within Keeliai, overtaking empty buildings. The bulk of its presence is visible in Central; while its front entrance can be accessed from any sector, its windows and garage door can only be accessed from Central.

Outside roof access is not available, as shown by option A in this log. Teleporting directly into or out of the Hotel is impossible due to the wards and its semi-interdimensional nature. Teleporting from room to room within the Hotel is entirely possible, however.

THE RULES

The Hotel has two unbreakable rules.

One: Anyone committing an act of violence against a patron will face Anton in battle. This includes both non-patrons being violent and patrons acting violently against another patron. Physical violence is the most obvious, but entering a locked room belonging to another patron, or theft, count as eviction-worthy actions. Ordinarily this rule was limited to patrons, but since being in Keeliai Anton has expanded that to all those inside the Hotel due to its use as neutral-ground for gang-members who don't reserve rooms.

Two: Don't try to get into the Twenty-Fourth Room. This room is locked, sealed and warded, and the only way to enter it is through the key Anton keeps on his person at all times. Attempting to enter is grounds for immediate ejection at minimum.

Please warn me if you plan to break either of these rules. Please also assume your character was warned for them upon check-in.

Minor rules include the open carrying of weapons, which is allowed, and the prohibition of alcohol. As long as these rules are obeyed Anton accepts any patron, regardless of affiliation.

THE FEATURES

The Hotel has several notable features on nearly all floors, not including the rooms themselves. The commons constitute nearly the whole of the ground floor and the hallways, and are public areas in which anyone can move freely. The second floor is comprised primarily of single or twin rooms, while the third flor is evenly distributed between singles and dormitories.

NOTE: All images below are rough approximations. Furniture and architectural details, particularly colour discrepancies, shouldn't be considered hard representations of the Hotel interior. The images are to give an idea of basic architecture, space and atmosphere.

A) THE LOBBY: The lobby is the main entrance for the Hotel and is where the reception desk is located. The entrance doors are double and unusually broad, with six sigils on either side, one for each sector, to specify destination. The lobby contains the right-hand staircase to the second floor and an overlooking balcony on all side. The staircase can be used in an escalator fashion by hitting the sigils on the base and height. [ ]

(a) RECEPTION: The reception desk. This is where Anton keeps his work, the keys, and the manual controls for the Hotel's shift. There is a magical intercom accessible here. Anton can also exchange currencies here. There's also an informal census sheet for newcomers to write their names and languages, and any other details.

Hanging over the desk from the balcony above is a kedanese house-guardian—a birdhouse with a peppermint-fragranced candle on the porch and an owl tucked inside to project the nest. It's a good-luck charm meant to help prevent nightmares and ill-will, and no kedan will fight in its view.

B) THE OFFICE: This is not open to the public and is usually kept locked. It connects to Anton's room through the bathroom.

(b) PRIVATE BATHROOM: Anton’s private bathroom.

C) ANTON'S BEDROOM: This is Anton's private room and is not accessible to the public. The door adjoining the lobby is hidden under the stairs, but the room can be accessed through the office. [ ]

D) THE KITCHEN: Part of the commons. The kitchen is open for everyone's use, but when Anton has the time to spare he also cooks for his patrons, frequently leaving public-use frozen meals for those without the time or inclination to cook themselves. There are signs requesting patrons do their own washing-up. The kitchen has indications of having made the shift from fire-based cooking, and having dabbled in gas-based cooking, before Anton finally settled on magically-enhanced appliances.

(c) INCINERATOR: What happens to the Hotel’s waste. Powered by magic, the incinerator is hot enough to melt metal to slag. It is also one part of the Hotel’s temperature controls. The incinerator is a staff-only appliance.

(d) FREEZER: The walk-in freezer is where Anton stores, well, frozens. It is part of the Hotel’s temperature controls. This is a staff-only door, as the fridges have freezers for public use. The pantry area is to the left of it.

(e) ‘BOILER’: This is where water generated from the air by sigils is stored. It’s placed between the incinerator and the freezer due to the fact that each of them contribute to the balance of hot and cold temperature changes not only within the plumbing but within the Hotel at large; the ‘boiler’ is, essentially, the fulcrum for the Hotel’s temperature control.

Attached to the kitchen through the arches is a dining-area for those who don't see the need for anything special. [ ]

E) THE DINING AREAS: The first dining-area is attached directly to the kitchen and is not much more than two rows of wooden tables and benches. It's a communal area, meant for travellers or those seeking an easy meal.

The second dining area is located through the door opposite the kitchen and is more finely furnished. Although still a communal area, it's better tailored toward groups and breakfasts, and deliberately planned meals. This area also has a bar-area, though nothing alcoholic is kept there. Instead the bar is used as a secondary preparation area for meals, particularly when the Hotel is full as a bed-and-breakfast.

Since roughly September 2014, the second dining area has been used as a training-room instead. As of March ‘2016’ its space has also been thirded for the garage Anton’s built in the far corner.

F) THE GARAGE: The garage is a new room built during March ‘2016’ in-game. It has enough room for two cars and will be permanently housing Skulduggery’s Bentley. It will also have enough room for four cubicle workspaces and as many storage spaces.

Bladewolf is renting a space for his sword.

The Hotel's only back door is located in the corner of the garage, as a double rising door to allow for vehicles. This door will only exit into Central. [ ] [ ]

G) THE LAUNDRY: The laundry-room is part of the commons. It is closed at regular hours, either early in the morning or late at night, for Anton to do the Hotel's laundry. Otherwise, it's open to the public. The laundry boasts four industrial-sized washers and four industrial-sized dryers. Use of them is complementary, but washing-powder can be bought at the desk. [ ]

H) COMMON-ROOM: The main part of the commons. The common-area is the sit-down, with the main fireplace and a secondary stairwell to the second floor. This room is where any trades take place, and there is a dedicated library-exchange in the corner. Current books available include Monster Hunting for Beginners; Monster Hunting for Beginners is Probably Inadvisable; and Seriously, Dude, Stop Monster Hunting. [ ] [ ]

I) BATHROOM: The bathroom is accessible from all major areas of the commons (lobby, dining-areas and common-area) but is a single room. Its primary features are the toilet facilities, but includes a handful of shower stalls. Appropriately stalled and partitioned, the bathroom is gender- and species-neutral.

SECOND-FLOOR ROOMS: The second-floor rooms are primarily twin-rooms. Among the largest in the Hotel, they're for those who require a great deal of space as well as privacy. Though pricier than most other rooms, they're also the nearest to the commons and have their own en-suites.

As well as the twins the second-floor has two small, cozy singles with double-beds. These rooms are budget, being tiny and over the stairs, and with minimal facilities. They are kept for staff-members. Finally, Anton has changed two twins into four-person dormitories for groups without much need for space. [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]

J) BALCONY: The balcony extends around three sides overlooking the lobby, but the area over Anton’s rooms is a small commons with tea and coffee facilities and places to sit.

THIRD-FLOOR ROOMS: The third-floor rooms are primarily doubles and dormitories. The doubles are among the most popular of Anton's rooms, having a double-bed apiece and private facilities. Larger than the singles the floor below, they're nevertheless cosy and private.

The dormitories are newly furnished, altered to take the large local population into account. They are among the largest rooms available and can hold up to eight people apiece. They have shared facilities. [ ] [ ]

(b) THE GRANDFATHER CLOCK: Located beside the stairs leading up to the third-floor, the grandfather clock appears to be a simple teller of time. In fact it is tied to the Hotel's automated location-shifting sequence, and is warded against tampering. [ ]

CURRENT CONDITION: 1 DEC 2015 - ??? 2016

In December the Midnight Hotel suffers a medley of glitches, thanks to the fog lingering around the city. The biggest handicap is to the Hotel's ability to access all the sectors, to the point where Anton has willingly turned that feature off.

Otherwise, small instances of utilities not working continue through the month.

CONDITION: 9 NOV - 1 DEC 2015

The proprietor is grumpy this month, and due to Foreigners leaving a few kedanese staff-members had stepped up to the plate.

Also, Erskine turned into a bunny. Yep.

CONDITION: 4 OCT - 9 NOV 2015

As the weather turns cooler in October the Midnight Hotel clears out some, and is able to breathe for the first time in a couple of months. Some of the regular gang-kedan are holding workshops for the building of spirit-houses and planterboxes, and the atmosphere is significantly more relaxed than it was in September.

There are new signs in the kitchen requesting that Klaus and Raine not be allowed to cook together, and a new arrival in the form of an old friend of Anton's.

CONDITION: 5 SEPT - 4 OCT 2015

During September the Hotel remains a refuge against the heat and humidity, but the amiability has made way for tension thanks to the arrival of the Chihuelan contingent. Malcil, the resident Chihuelan 'traitor', remains as inconspicuous as possible. The spider infestation is also lingering.

Despite the threat, there is luckily no blow-up within the Hotel, and the Chihuelans never discover Malcil's presence there.

As always, the front-desk tablet is of course accompanied by inane voiceovers, recorded by an old friend.

CONDITION: 3 AUGUST - 5 SEPT 2015

August sees the Hotel once again a refuge against the heat, though this year the atmosphere is far more amiable than the previous. Anton, once more in charge of the Hotel, has taken up cleaning with a vengeance both to make up for his month-long boredom and to try and eradicate the current spider infestation.

He's also wearing heels.

As always, the front-desk tablet is of course accompanied by inane voiceovers, recorded by an old friend.

CONDITION: 2 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2015

During July the Midnight Hotel is in need of help for its daily process thanks to Anton's chronic but as yet unnamed condition flaring up.

Jintou, an ex-Snake NPC, is no longer present at the Hotel due to being kidnapped. In other news, the front-desk tablet is of course accompanied by inane voiceovers from his tablet, recorded by an old friend.

CONDITION: 2 JUNE - 2 JULY 2015

The Midnight Hotel has become a haven for Jintou, a kedanese ex-Snake, and Marcil, a Chihuelan turncoat, both known soul-gem muggers. Anton is keeping a close eye on whoever tries to interact with them.

His new room-mate aside, Anton is also still accompanied by inane voiceovers, recorded by an old friend.

CONDITION 5 MAY - 2 JUNE 2015

During May the Hotel's interdimensional exit function will be glitching while the Hotel asserts itself over Sky Sector. As a result, people exiting will occasionally be shunted out into Sky Sector instead of their intended sector of choice.

Anton himself now also uses a tablet as a calendar to alert him to tasks and events, accompanied by inane voiceovers from an old friend.

CONDITION 16 APRIL - 5 MAY 2015

During the last two weeks of April, the Hotel was inundated with Foreigners in need of a place to stay, most of whom were housed in sleeping bags in the commons. The stairs remain escalator-like.

CONDITION 5 APRIL - 15 APRIL 2015

As of this month Yuri Lowell is now manning the Hotel's complementary breakfasts and there is an informal census sheet at the front desk. There's also a new feature in the lobby, a kedanese house-guardian in the shape of a birdhouse. The garage is finished and open for use.

The stairs continue to run on 'escalator' logic, provided the feature is activated through the sigil 'buttons' at the base and height of the stairs.

CONDITION 5 MARCH - 4 APRIL 2015

This month there is some major construction occurring in the Hotel's back corner, owing to the construction of a garage. This garage will allow access for up to two cars (one spot reserved for Skulduggery's Bentley) and several smaller vehicles. Access will only be from a door in Central Sector. There will also be room in the garage for small work-spaces or semi-laboratories.

The stairs will also run more prominently on 'escalator' logic, provided the feature is activated through the sigil 'buttons' at the base and height of the stairs.

CONDITION 6 FEB - 4 MARCH 2015

The kedan population in the Hotel is slowly growing as they become more comfortable there once more. Though there is a regular gang presence, only a handful of the patrons are actually gang-members; the rest only seem to be present to escort impoverished non-gang-members to safety or to socialise. There has been no more trouble with the Snakes, though it's impossible to tell whether that is due to their first failed attempt at authority or because Tu Yunxu has ordered the Hotel off-limits.

The Hotel's resources are once again at their peak, and the public console in the lobby is now open to the public.

CONDITION 1 JAN - 5 FEB 2015

The Hotel is open to both Foreigners and kedan and is back to its usual state of cleanliness and operation. It still does not have a full stockpile.

There is some construction work begun in the lobby. The workers are kedan from the Metalworkers family, with whom Anton has brokered a deal to build a console for the Hotel.

CONDITION 8 DEC 2014 - 1 JAN 2015

After the Foreigners awoke to find a year had passed Anton has been on a cleaning frenzy to get the Hotel into proper shape and restock its supplies. While it doesn't yet have the same stockpile it did before the timeskip, its supplies are all sufficient for a full house.

The Hotel has been investigated by the Snakes, an event anyone currently staying at the Hotel may have witnessed.

Anton has offered rooms to all Foreigners and will manufacture means of payment (from regular currency to barter to an exchange of services) for any Foreigners who choose to stay.

CONDITION MID/LATE NOV - 8 DEC 2014

The Hotel is being used as the springboard to confront Malicant. Thanks to coordinates offered by Ryou, Anton successfully reactivated the Hotel's transitional wards and moved it to a location beneath the shell.

It is now being used as the location for a giant slumber party.

CONDITION EARLY OCT - MID/LATE NOV 2014

The main door is back to having static-snow around the inside edges of the door-jamb, but it now has an opalescent sheen. The door still looks onto whichever sector by which a person entered, but that view can be hard-reset into a chosen sector by touching the relevant sigil by the doors.

Physical and magical repairs to the lobby have continued apace. The walls are frequently covered in sigils while Anton works on repairing and then updating them as needed, but those moments are becoming infrequent as Anton completes his work.

The secondary dining-room has been cleared for use as a training area as of this post.

CONDITION 24 SEPT - EARLY OCT 2014

Thanks to an attack the main doors are broken, including the feature which allows transfer between sectors. The lobby is also badly damaged, with swathes of stone and timber hewn from the floor and bloodstains apparent. The reception desk has been totaled. The plumbing in the commons is currently interrupted, with only the kitchen with reliable water-access.

Sigils are once again readily apparent as graffiti on the walls, but singed and sooty where they've been broken. It's obvious someone is changing those sigils, and as they're properly repaired they will once more vanish.

CONDITION 23 AUG - 24 SEPT 2014

The door will look as though it leads to whichever sector by which the relevant person entered, but it will have an odd sort of static-snow around the inside edges of the door-jamb.

All the downstairs furniture has now been properly replaced and the front doors had been properly renovated into doubles to allow the hatchlings passage. There are no more marks on the walls, but various segments of the walls, doors and ceilings (eg the northern wall in the common room; the doors leading into the kitchen; the ground-floor stairs) may show, at various times, layers and layers of glowing symbols while Anton works on the wards.

There is some minor water damage to an area beside the reception-desk and the wards have been temporarily changed to accommodate an outside intercom.

CONDITION 1 AUG - 23 AUG 2014

Upon entrance into Keeliai the floors of the downstairs common areas are all obviously new. So are the windows. The curtains are still missing and there are some freshly-scrubbed areas of the walls, and there’s almost no furniture. Some areas of the walls seem to be a bit sooty or marked as if by graffiti, but in with unidentifiable symbols.

During the heat-wave part of the front wall has been also removed to make space for the turtle hatchlings through the door.

Ah, shoot, I spaced and should have noted this sooner-- China's no longer at the Hotel. She is very done.
